A mill is always built besides a
stream because the force of the water turns the wheel.

Before people used mill ponds, if there was a drought they just had to wait till it
rained again. But later on people started to make and use mill ponds. They would build a
wall or dam and the water would stay there. Mill ponds would supply water when it
was needed. If they wanted water to flow, they opened the sluice gates. If the mill pond
got too full they opened the back sluice gate to let some water out.
