The History of Roath Schools

The Village or 'Dame' School served the village of Roath until 1899 when it was demolished.
It was situated on Albany Road next door to Spring (or Walnut Tree) Cottage

1885 Howard Gardens High School opens.
1887 Albany Primary School opens
1895 Roath Park Primary School opens
1900 The Roath village school closes
1900 Marlborough Primary School opens
1914-1918 Albany Road School becomes a military hospital.
1941 Marlborough Road Junior School building destroyed in air raid.
1948 Girls move from the old Howard Gardens school site to the new Lady Margaret's School in Penylan.
1953 The new Howardian building opens on the Hampton Court Road site
1968 Willows High School opens in Tremorfa
1990 Howardian closes despite a well supported public campaign to keep a secondary school serving Roath.
1998 Willows High School celebrates its 30th Birthday!
