The Battle of Britain was Hitler’s attempt to invade Britain. He code named this: Operation Sea-lion.

From July 1940 Hitler’s bombers targeted the ports and air fields of Britain, since he did not want any attacks from air or sea while his troops were crossing the Channel. However, one night a lost German bomber dropped its bombs on London by mistake.

The British retaliated by bombing Berlin. This made Hitler furious, so he staged large scale attacks on British cities, and forgot the air fields. This enabled the R.A.F. to get back to full strength and shoot the bombers down in large numbers.

Thus ended the Battle of Britain.
