When they returned to their cell, they were placed in irons. Philip Evans asked the governor for a harp and played the instrument throughout the evening, for he was an accomplished musician.

The next morning , the men left their cell in the Black Tower for the last time and were placed upon a cart which took them from Cardiff Castle. 

The cart travelled through Crockherbtown to Longcross; then it turned north along Plwcca Lane (City Road) a rough track that led towards the village of Roath. At the end of this lane were the Gallows Fields.
